Depression - What is it?
Depression is an illness, an overwhelming feeling which dulls thinking, mood and concentration, saps energy and interest in food, sex, work and everyday activities and disrupts sleep.
Depression is much more powerful than the normal ups and downs that we all experience from day to day. Depression can last for months rather than days or weeks and is more than we can cope with. Feelings of guilt and worthlessness can become overpowering, relationships with loved ones are often affected, and a depressed person may frequently think about death and suicide.
While Aware recommends that anyone who feels they may be depressed should see their GP and follow appropriate medical advice, it is also important to emphasise the crucial role of self-help for enduring recovery.
