Education

Aware’s various education programmes promote knowledge and develop understanding of the importance of mental health and depression. The programmes also help to encourage help-seeking behaviour in the people attending.

Mood Matters in Pregnancy

This programme is designed for families.  The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of the mental health of parents/guardians, before, during and after pregnancy.  It highlights how their mental health can help develop good mental health of the unborn child and the importance of this to the child from the ages of 0-5.  The programme will provide parents/guardians with the knowledge around mental health, help them look at the risks in their own lives, help them recognise signs and symptoms, the impact on an unborn child/infant and how good mental health of an infant can have an impact in adolescence and later years.  They will also be given ideas and suggestions of how best to improve their own mental health.

Mood Matters for Young People

‘Mood Matters’ is a programme aimed at young people in Years 11 and upwards, which seeks to enhance understanding of depression alongside promoting positive mental health. It was launched in 2000 and each year up to 250 presentations are delivered across Northern Ireland to young people in schools, colleges and other youth organisations.

A key part of the programme involves a PowerPoint presentation which educates young people on:

  • Mental health and mental ill health
  • The prevalence of depression
  • Signs, symptoms and causes of depression
  • The importance of talking to someone
  • Sources of help and support
  • Self care and care of others.

Teachers’ resources are supplied to enable staff to discuss the material before and after each session.

Public Talks

As part of our commitment to open, accessible information provision and taking services to where people are, Aware Defeat Depression holds a twice yearly series of public talks to provide the public with information on depression and a variety of related issues. These talks are typically delivered by mental health professionals who bring their expertise and the most up-to-date information. At the end of each talk time is allowed for questions and this can be a great opportunity for audience members to put their queries to an expert in the field. Our public talks are free of charge and open for anyone to attend.
