AWARE, the national depression charity for Northern Ireland has today welcomed the pledge from British Prime Minister, Theresa May to help more people with depression and reduce the number of suicides throughout the United Kingdom.

The statement is expected to be today by the British Prime Minister in what will be her first major speech of 2017. During the speech on domestic policy, the PM will detail how employers can better support employees forced to take time off work due to mental illness. The Conservative Party Leader will also outline steps that schools can take to better support pupils vulnerable to a mental health condition.

Siobhan Doherty is the Chief Executive of Northern Ireland's national depression charity, AWARE. Siobhan hopes that Theresa May will acknowledge the mental health needs of the people of Northern Ireland in her speech. Siobhan said,

"The prevalence of mental illness is 25% higher in Northern Ireland than any other region in the UK, therefore it is vital that this is recognised during the Prime Ministers speech and that she clearly outlines her committment to helping people with depression in Northern Ireland.

"In November 2016, it emerged that targets were not being met by Northern Ireland health trusts with regards to treatment for people with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. This is evidential that more money is needed in mental health provision in order to reach out and help more people.

"I particularly welcome the Prime Ministers committment to ensure that pupils in schools get access to the right support, especially those young people that are more vulnerable to a mental health condition. AWARE delivered their young peoples mental health programme to over 8000 young people in schools and communities across Northern Ireland last year. The 'AWARE Mood Matters Young people' programme is aimed at 14-18 year olds and equips them with the knowledge and skills they can use to maintain good mental health and build resilience in order to better deal with problems and challenges.

"I look forward to listening to the Prime Ministers address and will be listening intently to hear her plans for addressing the increasing number of people with depression in Northern Ireland."
