Hundreds of men, women and children took to the pathways of Omagh to help stamp out the stigma of mental illness and to raise money for AWARE a local charity working with people who suffer with depression and bi-polar.

AWARE’s Mood Walk now in its second year took place on Sunday, October 2nd and the charity saw the number of who participated in the walk double from last years.  Such support from the local community helps raise awareness and raise the much needed funds to educate and support people affected by depression and bi-polar.

The 5k and 10k fun-filled afternoon walk began at Omagh Leisure Centre at 14.00pm and took in the local town. Lovers' Retreat before returning to the Leisure Centre.  Prior to the walk all participants took part in a short motivating warm up in the Leisure Centre to lift the mood and get everyone both physically and mentally prepared for the Mood Walk.

Just like last year Killyclogher’s James McGinn, the well-known general manager of the Europa Hotel in Belfast, was present to say a few words to inspire the crowd and to bring a better understanding to the community of the great work that AWARE undetake daily.

James identified AWARE as “A charity that is close to my heart and emphasised that they are doing fantastic work across Northern Ireland to help people affected by depression”. He spoke of how “Depression is very often a hidden illness, the silent killer and that there remains a stigma associated with mental illness”

Margaret McCrossan and Teresa Sloan both from AWARE thanked everyone who has taken part, sponsored the event and help in anyway.

Maxol, Lidl, Jimmy McGirr, Local Schools. Order of Malta. Motoring club and the local fund raising committee are all key players in ensuring the Mood Walk was a success.
