Newtownabbey gym, Pure Gym has announced a new fundraising partnership with local mental health charity, AWARE. The partnership will make an effort to make a real difference in helping the charity support and educate more people on the illness of depression in North Belfast and surrounding areas.

Committed to providing the community with low-cost and high quality physical fitness support, the management wanted to support a local charity on the run up to Christmas and with the increasing numbers of people with mental illness and depression, AWARE was the natural choice.

Assistant Manager of Pure Gym, Newtownabbey, Sean Keenan said;

“For us, working within an area and community that has seen first-hand the effects of mental health we feel that by helping raise awareness and some much needed funds for an amazing organisation such as AWARE it is the least that we can offer. The gym and fitness industry in general can be almost pigeon holed into being all about one’s body, but we can assure you it's not, and getting physically active no matter how or where you may feel most comfortable, it will have a bigger impact on the health of your mind than you could ever imagine. It's not the cure but its steps in the right direction.

“Within the next few months and in the run up to Christmas, we will be holding several events which members and non-members of Pure Gym - Newtownabbey can take part in. Our first big event will be held on Tuesday 31st October at our fancy dress evening where we will be holding 3 charity classes with Legs Bums and Tums, Spin and Circuits.

“We would also like to openly invite any sports teams who would like to take part in a charity spin between now and Christmas. We will be opening the gym to all clubs that would be interested in taking part in raising money and awareness for AWARE as well as getting in some valuable fitness sessions before the Christmas break. These fitness classes will be our very popular Spin Classes and with 30 bikes available the whole team (and coaches!!) can take part!

Colleen Milligan is the Corporate Fundraiser from AWARE. Colleen said,

“We are delighted to be supported by Pure Gym on the run up to Christmas.  Both Sean and Eoghan from the gym were very keen to support mental health in their local area and really want to help make a difference.  Given the high levels of mental ill health, particularly amongst men, in North Belfast, we want to thank Pure Gym in Newtownabbey for helping AWARE to promote our services and hopefully encourage anyone suffering from the illness of depression to seek help.

“A relationship with Pure Gym will help support AWARE’s key strategic objectives in promoting our services and helping destigmatise mental health. The partnership will also offer an opportunity to encourage more people to volunteer for AWARE and participate in our vital fundraising activities and events we hold throughout the year.

“Every £15 raised by the gym will enable AWARE to deliver our much needed mental health programme to a young person in a post-primary school or community based setting here in Northern Ireland.”
