“On a Saturday morning in early March, a group of intrepid explorers from Kainos, set about the task of walking to the top of Cuilcagh Mountain amidst the clouds. With the ground covered in snow and battling a squally wind, the team battled on in jovial spirits with each stride taking them towards their goal. This bunch was determined and co-operative in their pursuit of the goal.” Kainos.

Kainos is a leading digital technology company with 13 offices globally, including Derry. A team from the company’s Derry office joined together last month to raise an incredible £1659.00 for AWARE. The team set themselves the challenge of getting to the top of the Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail in Fermanagh more commonly known as “The Stairway to Heaven”, one of the largest expanses of blanket bog in Northern Ireland, all while raising funds for AWARE.

The team regularly raise funds for different charities and this time they were inspired to come together and raise funds for mental health awareness. One of the team members Jarlath Gallagher has very kindly shared his personal story with us…

“I am a thirty-something dad of two working in a professional job within the IT industry. I have done what others in my age group have done in getting married and buying houses along with having children and all that goes along with this. Just a run-of-the-mill dad really, nothing special and nothing grand.

On the surface, many see me as confident and able to do anything…but over the last few years this couldn't be further from the truth. Having had to deal with the loss of a parent and relationship struggles, my mental health had taken a huge knock and was steadily declining over the past couple of years. It had gotten to the point where I had reached an absolute low, I found myself considering things I never thought would ever cross my mind. Thankfully I had the wherewithal to engage with health care professionals before these thoughts turned to actions.

It was at this point that it became so apparent how much great work is done out there by organisations such as AWARE. What can I do to show them how thankful I am that they are there? How can I support them to help others? This was easy, with my colleagues here in the Kainos office in Derry, we set about organising a charity walk. We are quite active in raising funds for deserving organisations throughout the year and the Cuilcagh walk in Fermanagh was the destination for the one just past. Using the great Facebook fundraising features and social media networks, we were able to raise over £1500, which was just fantastic. I found the process of doing the walk and raising the funds to be therapeutic in itself and I am so glad we were able to raise these funds for such a deserving organisation.

Thank you AWARE for all that you do."

Thank you to all of the team at Kainos in Derry for choosing to support AWARE. Funds raised will make a huge difference to those in Northern Ireland living with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder.
