Fundraisers brave the cold at AWARE New Year Splash Event
More than 60 brave fundraisers made a splash in the chilly waters of Newcastle Beach to raise money and awareness for a local mental health charity, AWARE.
Saturday’s (January 9) New Year Splash was hosted by AWARE (formerly Aware Defeat Depression) who provide a range of services to help people affected by depression across Northern Ireland.
Swimming enthusiasts from across Northern Ireland, including the hardy Newcastle Harbour Swimmers, shook off the last of the festive excesses by taking the plunge in the Irish Sea.
After the splash all the swimmers warmed up with a well-earned complimentary cup of hot chocolate and shortbread in the iconic Slieve Donard Resort and Spa.
The first 70 lucky participants were treated to a free spa pass for two at the Spa at The Culloden Estate and Spa or The Slieve Donard.
It is estimated that more than £3000 was raised through fundraising, which will go directly to local people who are affected by depression and mental illness.
Teresa Sloan, Director of Fundraising and Communications at AWARE said,
“We were overwhelmed by the response to our New Year Splash and we are grateful to those who braved the elements to come out and support us.
“Those taking part appeared to enjoy it, but I’d say were glad to get into the cozy surroundings of the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa after the event. It’s a great start to AWARE’s 20th anniversary year and we look forward to more successful events this year.”Tags: AWARE | Charity | Fundraising | New Year Splash | Newcastle | Slieve Donard | Splash | Swimmers | Swimming
