‘Let’s talk about it… a conversation on depression.’ The next public talk will be in Carrickfergus on 11 November

After three successful events in Bangor, Coalisland and Craigavon, the fourth in these series of talks will be held in The Jubilee Hall, Carrickfergus Town Hall, Carrickfergus on the 11th November 2015 at 7pm (refreshments at 6.45). As the only charity in Northern Ireland dedicated to helping those with depression, we hope that the public talks will help de-stigmatise the illness of depression and encourage more people to talk about it.

We believe that it is important that people with depression and those close to them, know how to access relevant and important information on the illness to help them better understand it, and help them in their journey to recovery.

We will have experts in the field of mental health to talk about depression and explain the illness from a professional point of view as well as someone who has used their services and is now recovering from depression. Speaking at the event will be a carer giving a carers perspective on what it is like looking after someone with depression and a GP talking about their experience of assessing and treating depression. There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions of the speakers and access further information about AWARE’s services.

On the night of the public talk, we will have the facilitators from the local Carrickfergus support group to talk to people and give them more information about the groups and how they can attend the next meeting if they feel it would be beneficial to them.

Attending the event will be Robin, support group facilitator for the Carrickfergus group.

Speaking about the local support group, Robin said,

“We do not wear a badge when out and about signalling that we have depression and so the support group is one of very few means to meet other people who have had similar experiences, while acknowledging that everyone's experience is different.

The next Support Group meeting will take place in the Miskimmon Suite, Old Town Hall, Carrickfergus on Thursday 19th November. It is a fortnightly group and starts at 6.30pm and ends at 8.00pm
