We’re excited to bring you the final instalment of AWARE NI’s #MentalHealthMarathon!

For the past few weeks, we’ve been sharing the inspiring stories of marathon runners who are raising awareness and funds to support local people affected by depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder!

Through their stories, we’ve demonstrated that mental health recovery is a marathon and not a sprint. Each step towards better mental health is a victory worth celebrating.

This week, Steven Young from BlueBreak (an organisation which supports AWARE NI through donating a portion of profits) shares his motivation for supporting AWARE NI through this year’s Belfast City Marathon and how running has helped make a positive impact to his mental health:

“I have always been someone who enjoys pushing myself to achieve new goals, and having something to aim for is always a positive in my experience. I believe that taking on this challenge will not only help me improve my physical fitness but also provide me with a sense of personal accomplishment that comes with completing this run. Additionally, I am thrilled to be running for AWARE NI, an organisation that is close to my heart.

“My personal connection to AWARE NI stems from my own experience with mental health challenges. I have struggled with anxiety and depression in the past and understand first-hand how difficult it can be to find the support and resources needed to overcome these challenges, especially when you are in a certain mindset. AWARE NI does incredible work in providing education, support, and advocacy for those affected by mental health challenges, and I am honoured to be able to contribute to their cause.

“Running has also been an incredibly positive influence on my mental health. I find that when I run, I am able to clear my mind and release any stress or tension that I may be feeling at the time. Additionally, the sense of accomplishment that comes with completing a challenging run can do wonders for my confidence and overall sense of well-being. I am grateful to have discovered the positive impact that running can have on my mental health and look forward to continuing to explore this connection.

“For anyone considering running the marathon for AWARE NI, I would encourage you to take on this challenge and join me in supporting this important cause. Not only will you be able to improve your physical fitness and mental health, but you will also be contributing to an organisation and community that is making a real difference in the lives of those affected by mental health challenges in Northern Ireland.”
